April 22, 2025, marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, a global call to action to protect our environment and build a sustainable future. This year’s theme, OUR POWER, OUR PLANET™, is inspiring individuals, communities, and leaders to unite around the urgent need for renewable energy. It aims to unite behind renewable energy, with the goal of tripling the global generation of clean electricity by 2030.
Renewable energy comes from replenishable sources, like the sun, which do not produce greenhouse gas and therefore do not drive climate change. The energy ends our reliance on fossil fuels and the damage they cause to our environment and human health. Climate change continues to threaten our planet, but we have the solutions. By making smart energy choices at home, supporting clean technologies, and pushing for stronger environmental policies, each of us can contribute to a greener future. Whether switching to solar, biking to work, or urging governments and businesses to act, every action counts.
Denis Hayes, the organiser of the very first Earth Day and Board Chair Emeritus of EARTHDAY.ORG said, “For years we have been fed the lie that only fossil fuels can power the planet that is not true. By the 2030, the largest source of electricity generation on the planet will be solar power.”
Aidan Charron, Associate Director, Global Earth Day, said, “Switching to renewables also represents a humanitarian revolution — for the first time in human history, we have a path to provide virtually unlimited, low-cost energy for everyone. Improving the lives of billions of people around the world.”
Grassroots power has always driven positive change — from the civil rights movement to advances in gender equality and Indigenous rights. The 20 million people who marched on Earth Day in 1970 sparked the modern environmental movement, leading to cleaner air, water, and wildlife protections.
On Earth Action Day, join millions across the world in educating, advocating, and mobilising for climate justice. Participate in local clean-ups, plant trees, or attend events that promote sustainability. Use your voice on social media to raise awareness and inspire others.
Earth Day is not just a moment—it is a movement. Let this year be a turning point. Together, we can transform energy systems.
