Regulators and researchers use TSI particle instruments for engine emissions research around the world.
The TSI’s products help quantify and analyse particle emissions from light duty and heavy-duty engines, for both on-road and stationary applications.
One can find TSI products used in the research and development of advanced internal combustion engines and aftertreatment systems, like Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) or Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF). Their particle counters quantify the number concentration of aerosol particles. TSI particle sizers measure the size distribution of exhaust particles.
Their instruments allow measurements at the tailpipe, from the Constant Volume Sampler (CVS), or from other partial flow samplers. TSI’s fast sizer spectrometers may also enable high time resolution mass measurements of engine exhaust particles.

TSI’s Particle Number Counter
TSI’s condensation particle counter was the standard reference instrument during the development of the UNECE PMP, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Particle Measurement Programme. Its successor, the Engine Exhaust Condensation Particle Counter 3790A, detects nanoparticles larger than 23nm per Euro 5b / Euro 6 regulations. When combined with a diluter and a volatile particle remover, the EECPC measures solid exhaust particles to PMP requirements. The TSI Engine Exhaust Condensation Particle Counter (EECPC) Model 3790A-10 is designed specifically to meet upcoming Post Euro 6 regulations, and also satisfy requirements for UNECE R83 and R49. The EECPC 3790A-10 has a lower particle size detection limit (D50) of 10 nm.
TSI’s Particle Sizing solution
The new 3095 system addresses the industry’s need for robust and repeatable measurements that are in excellent agreement with PMP-compliant instruments. This is achieved by an integrated sample conditioning system consisting of two porous tube diluters and a volatile particle remover with full characterization and integration of the particle size dependent losses from the point of sampling to the EEPS. Based on the emerging requirements to measure solid particles below 23 nm in diameter, the system has been optimised to substantially reduce particle losses.
On-road Engine Emissions testing
Assessing emission levels for construction machinery, marine engines, buses, and other vehicles under realistic use conditions has quickly become a popular topic in recent news. For applications with extremely high particle concentrations, for example in diesel engines not equipped with DPFs, the High-Concentration NPET (3795-HC) was recently developed, and it is used to measure total solid particle concentrations upstream and downstream of engines with DPFs or GPFs, cold start emissions, or biomass combustion emissions.
