The Indian government has announced banning import of air conditioners (ACs) with refrigerants in order to boost domestic production. The Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification stating split system and others ACs with refrigerants have been moved from “free” to “prohibited” category.
According to reports, the fresh ban on importing ACs with refrigerants has been imposed after approval was given by the Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. As per government data, China and Thailand are the top exporters of ACs to India – contribute over 90 percent of India’s imports of ACs.
“This measure by itself does not have much impact on the company and industry but all the measures put together will give a boost to the industry,” said B Thiagarajan, Managing Director of Bluestar while speaking to ET Now.
He added that there is enough capacity in the country for finished goods manufacturing but the components are still dependent on imports.
