Can we actually help to make green building more effective and like now the things have started, on the indoor quality of the AC?
What is green energy building for the people!
Generally, people think which has more air or more greenery or lighter thing – is a green building. But what I feel, it is a thing which we can reduce, whether it is energy, whether it is wastage, or use whatever material is already used, we can reuse it and how we can recycle the things So, we can optimise the resources whatever we have.
There are a number of features which can make building a green. The model of any building can be a green building, whether it is a house or hospital; whether it is a church or Gurdwara – any building can be a green building. So, efficient use of energy is one thing, efficient use of water is the other thing and other resources, use of renewable energy, such as solar energy pollution and waste reduction layer, which can help you to improve the indoor quality. A good indoor quality use of material which is non-toxic or we can vary things and the design of the building and that is also one of the major parts to make it green building.
So, structural outline of the building is the parts. The important argumentation of utilisation of sunlight is the important thing. Research on the building materials is another thing. Reusing existing material is the thing and solid indoor air quality is other thing. How we can clean or maintain or manage the building is the other thing. Having said that, the AC primarily has always been considered as a bigger thing, that can save on the energy and on the quality part. So, with the Covid also coming in, this has also become a discussion point. In fact, it has already started that Covid spreads through the air conditioning only. That in the first wave was a major thing, but still, we need to take care of all these things.
Once we are planning the building, there are a few things which we need to take care that how energy efficient our design is! Since we are the people who are working on solar and things, we think that solar is the major thing which can also again reduce all the major energy consumption. So, that is the one thing which we need to work out. How is the building, orientation is another thing, how we can use the solar majorly; proper orientation can significantly reduce the cooling load and improve energy efficiency. Facing of the building is another thing, which we need to take care while we are making the building and probably most of the part of it is the north south facade, it is always considered a better thing. Proper shading is also another big thing while we are making green building, so that can also help.
While we are doing window alterations, important thing is, if we make more of windows – and probably you need to use more AC so that ratio is also very important. When we are designing the building, if we are doing the proper insulation on the walls, that can also help us a lot. It helps cut down the heat load in the building and those are downsizing the air conditioning equipment required to cool and space and everything. So, while doing all these things, there are a few other things which we can take here we need to buy the AC which are energy efficient AC. Two years back to 20 years back or 10 years back in this industry, everybody was looking at the price and looking at the normal things like 2 Star, 3 star, now we need to look at which is the best, if we need to really control on things. Hence, we need to procure those AC which are really best in the performance and there has to be compliance to the ISHRAE or ASHRAE or whatever certification we have.
We need to use the BLDC Motors for our equipment, we need to use variable speed pumps. Actually, they are very silent, they have very long-life sustainability point of view. All these things will add to the sustainability, if we use these kinds of products, and dedicated outdoor air system needs to be there. The demand control ventilations and air-to-air heat recovery system that is again one of the biggest things; we can use that to control the humidity in the summer season. And, in the winter season, it can be used for the doing what I do for humidification. All these things, I think are the more valuable things while we are planning for HVAC installation in the green building.
