Mitsubishi Electric India Private Limited has initiated the ground-breaking ceremony for its first-ever factory, which will produce Room Air Conditioners and Compressors tailored to the specific needs of the Indian market.
Mitsubishi Electric India Private Limited conducted the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for their inaugural Air Conditioner and Compressor Manufacturing unit in Ponerri, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has outlined plans to make a 100% foreign direct investment of ₹1891 Crore for the establishment of a manufacturing facility dedicated to air conditioners and compressors. This facility will be situated on a 52-acre land in Origins by Mahindra, located in the Peruvoyal Village of Gummidipoondi Taluk, Thiruvallur District in Chennai.

These products will serve various sectors, including Residential, Light Commercial, Hospitality, and Education. Mass production of air conditioners and compressors is scheduled to commence in October 2025, with an initial annual capacity of up to 300,000 sets of room air conditioners and 650,000 compressors.
The Bhumi Pujan ceremony for this Mitsubishi Electric India (MEI) project was led by Mr. Kazuhiko Tamura, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Electric India, and Mr. Naohiko Hosokawa, Director and Head of the Living Environment Division, along with other esteemed guests from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The ceremony included traditional rituals such as Bhumi Pujan, Homam, Coconut Breaking, and Stone Laying, conducted in Chennai, India.
Mr. Kazuhiko Tamura expressed his honor in establishing Mitsubishi Electric’s first manufacturing facility for air conditioners and compressors in India, emphasizing the company’s commitment to becoming a digital engineering leader, promoting carbon neutrality, and supporting Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted that this state-of-the-art facility will bolster their operations in India, meet customer demands, and contribute to the nation’s development.
Mr. Naohiko Hosokawa added that the Bhumi Pujan marks a significant milestone in Mitsubishi Electric’s dedication to providing innovative cooling solutions for Indian customers, supporting the local economy, creating job opportunities, and ensuring product excellence in comfort and convenience. The company plans to support India’s HVAC industry with energy-efficient products and technologies.
Mitsubishi Electric India has been contributing to India’s growth since 2010, and this investment aligns with the Make-In-India initiative. The facility will not only expand business but also enhance price competitiveness, supply stability, reduce lead times, and introduce comprehensive lifecycle solutions covering sales, service, facility management, and product recycling. This initiative is a significant step toward self-reliant India (Atma Nirbhar Bharat) and is expected to generate employment for over 2,000 people.
